Tom initially joined us on an interim basis as Finance Director for a 10 month contract, and after that spell stayed in touch to assist his successors in various aspects of the role. Tom re-joined in 2009 after another FD departure and stayed with AEL for almost 10 years. During that time Tom was my dependable right-hand wingman, totally assured in running a complex international finance function, but also assisted me in running the business commercially.

Tom is able to develop intense loyalty and commitment in his staff, who then deliver exceptional results. He can get stuck into the detail, happy to sit beside the most junior member of staff to help them, but can also contribute to board level strategic discussions and lead major projects. Most importantly, all of this is performed with a sense of humour and common sense.

Tom developed lasting business and personal relationships within AEL and within the wider French owned group. I enjoyed his company on numerous business trips in Europe and Africa, when he was keen to learn how our business operated at the coal face. He is a really top FD and a very good person.
